Anita Fung

Anita FungAnita Fung, who left at lunchtime after only a week here, is pictured with her litho prints, all done on the electric press, from photoshop files that she brought with her, already made into films so that they could create the plates to print straight away. She was unable to complete her silkscreen printing in such a short time so will return later this week or early next to check the silkscreen proof. Here you see some of her work, which I will explain in more detail later.

Jing, from Beijing

Monday, 13 August 2012

I am waiting to leave to walk back with one of the Chinese artists here to the artist village. She is called Jing and comes from Beijing. She is completing her masters here I think, and has produced a series of lithograph prints which she has drawn on stone, and printed by hand. The technician downstairs is presently adding layers of colour on the electric litho press.

Jing, from BeijingI will send some images of the stone and the hand press later. The stones are limestone and have to have their surface painstakingly prepared so that they are responsive to the marks the artists make. It is a long process.

Jing's imagery is a response to the Chinese Rail Disaster that happened last year. They have just recently remembered the dead on the anniversary here. As she added the final colour to the image, she said it made her feel uncomfortable looking at it. Which is what it is meant to do. It does seem to signify the harsh pain of the accident by using simple marks in flat colour, that allows the detailed drawn imagery to show through, without detracting from it. She has I think produced a strong series of 6 images.

I will be able to talk to her about it after the final prints are completed, together with how she will feel going home to Beijing. She leaves on Wednesday by train, a long journey but with a heavy pack of prints, the only way to travel.
