Print workshop in China

Frances in China [Guanlan]

This website is my account of my residency here, during August and early September 2012.

My "Work diary" is a record of my artworks as they progress through various stages to completion.

The "Day by day" section records my everyday experiences.

I started each day checking emails and although it was still 3am in the UK, it was 10am here, so time to start my work. I started by preparing to print ā€“ I think lithographs. When I say ā€˜Iā€™ that does not mean I could print my own. I just prepared the drawings, then the technicians who are artists in their own right, would print them for me.

One of the silkscreen technicians showed us his own work, woodblock and silkscreen printmaking ā€“ wonderful detailed pieces, printed perfectly of course, sometimes with many many layers. I will feel better when I have something printed myself, although the expectation here is great.

Here are the etching technicians printing. They are in on Saturday - overtime, to print an artist edition. He has sent the colours and the plates, and they are mixing the colours to match to his paper....they are very exact.
